What Is a Healing Abutment?
An abutment is the part of the implant that connects the crown to the
implant.
Before we can place the permanent abutment, we need to expose the implant.
To do this, your dentist will create an incision in your gums that exposes
the implant.
We can’t immediately place a crown because your gums need to heal.
Therefore, we will place a plastic healing abutment. This component allows
the gums to heal and protects the implant from bacteria and food, thereby
preventing infection.
Approximately 10-14 days later, we can take impressions for your permanent
abutment and crown.
What Happens at the Delivery Appointment?
At your delivery, your dentist will remove the healing abutment, place the
permanent abutment, and screw it in. Then, they’ll try on the crown,
checking the fit and if your bite is balanced.
If everything looks good, your dentist will cement the crown.
